2nd Annual Green Gift

Congratulations to The City of Kalamazoo Parks & Recreation for winning the 2014 Green Gift.

"The City of Kalamazoo Parks & Recreation, with the help of the Green Gift program, would like to create a community garden on the front lawn of our Youth Development Center called the 'Green Gift Garden.' The mission of the garden would be to create an outdoor classroom for youth of all ages where they would have the opportunity to gain hands-on, educational experiences about a wide variety of topics by using the garden as a vehicle for exploring those topics."

MRPA Green Gift Program

Established in 2013, the MRPA Green Gift program was envisioned by the MRPA Conference Committee. In lieu of a tote bag, portfolio, or similar delegate gift at the 2013 MRPA Conference & Trade Show, the Committee decided to donate funds to create an annual program to benefit the communities of MRPA members.

Green Gift Information

Eligibility
All Agency Members are encouraged to “think green” and develop project proposals.

Funding Availability
A new partnership with the Michigan Recycling Coalition and Schupan Recycling for the 2015 award will provide an allocation of up to $2,500 for the Green Gift.

Project Examples
The goal of the Green Gift is to implement more green projects and/or programs around the state with the focus on recycling. Funding can be used for a wide variety of projects or programs that meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Create or improve an existing recycling / waste-reduction program or system.
  • Integrate the use of recycled material in a project.
  • Create an educational / outreach program on the benefits of recycling.

Evaluation
Any project that benefits the environment and your agency are eligible. Projects will be evaluated on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to: the cost-savings that the project may provide short- or long-term; the creativity of the project in solving a problem or lessening impact on the environment; the creation of new partner opportunities; the visibility of the project to the public; educational opportunities provided by the project; and the prospect for future funding opportunities. The 2015 Conference Committee will choose the best proposal and the winner will be announced at the 2015 Conference.
