Performs a variety of work assisting in the development and implementation of parks and recreation programs for youth, teens and families, at various community and neighborhood locations, parks and the Youth Development Center; does related work as required.  This position requires evening and weekend work.

The Parks and Recreation Program Assistant will assist in implementing programs that center around healthy lifestyles/fitness, special events, outdoor park activities, education, arts and culture with in neighborhood parks, the Youth Development Center and various community locations; works under the direction of the Recreation Manager and assisting the Program Coordinator.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Conducts a variety of parks and recreation program activities for youth families and teens;
  • Coordinates and runs programs at schools, in parks, at the Youth Development Center or other community facilities;
  • Orders supplies;
  • Assists in hiring, training and placement of temporary employees and volunteers;
  • Distributes program promotional material and determines methods and coordinates social media for promoting programs, events, and the department;
  • Primary person responsible for coordinating the department website;
  • Involves self with community agencies related to parks and recreation programming;
  • Develops partnerships and secures sponsorship dollars for programs;
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the department marketing plan, including the reporting of quarterly updates regarding the attainment of goals;
  • Develops and maintains relationships with schools and Neighborhood Associations;
  • Attends meetings and acts as a liaison between the Parks and Recreation Department and schools, neighborhoods, organizations, and current and potential programming partners.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Core coursework of a Bachelor of Science in Parks and Recreation, or related field;
  • Good knowledge of parks and recreation principles and practices;
  • Able to work with the public;
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Good knowledge of technology, social media for promotional use;
  • Good skills and experience in generating and implementing ideas in parks and recreation programs such as fitness, healthy lifestyles, promoting healthy foods, leisure, arts/cultural and educational programs;
  • Good public relations skills;
  • Must be a caring person who enjoys working with the public;
  • Good skills in planning/teaching, developing partnerships, organizing programs and special events and ability to work with a diverse group of people.

 

This position requires someone to be able to lift up to 25 lbs., sit, stand, reach, squat and drive.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Experience in developing parks and recreation programs; experience in working with the public; experience working with websites, social media and in graphic design preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.  Member of Michigan Parks and Recreation Association, Certified Parks and Recreation Professional preferred.
