Flat Rock Teen Earns Trip to National Football Skills Championship

Scott McCormick to Represent the Detroit Lions at NFL Punt, Pass and Kick National Finals in San Diego

[San Diego, Calif.] – On Sunday, January 17, all eyes in the San Diego Chargers’ Qualcomm Stadium will be on Flat Rock resident Scott McCormick, age 13.  As the lone competitor selected from Michigan, McCormick will wear the powder blue and silver of the Detroit Lions as he competes for a top-place finish during the annual NLF Punt, Pass and Kick National Finals.

McCormick, age 13, is among 32 young football players from across the country that will compete in the Sunday event, which will take place prior to the AFC Division playoff game between the San Diego Chargers and New York Jets.  A special on-field award ceremony will be broadcast following the third quarter of the game, which airs on CBS.

More than 3.5 million boys and girls competed in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick program this year. To earn a spot at the National Finals, McCormick advanced through first a local PPK event, then the Michigan Punt, Pass and Kick Team Finals, hosted by the Michigan Recreation and Park Association on November 22, 2009 at Detroit’s Ford Field.

This Sunday, Punt, Pass and Kick finalists will compete separately in four age divisions, with the top scorer in each crowned national champion. All participants launch one punt, one pass and one place-kick, with scores based on distance and accuracy.

NFL Punt, Pass and Kick was established in 1961 and is the nation’s largest grassroots sports skills competition. The program is part of NFL Youth Football, which provides opportunities for children to play, watch and experience the game of football. The NFL Punt, Pass and Kick program is administered statewide by the Michigan Recreation and Park Association (MRPA).
